I would suggest reading it first yourself before giving it to a young reader. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio beat out Lionsgate. I hope none of it is gratuitous, but that can make it hit harder. Warner Bros has snatched up the movie rights to Uprooted, Naomi Novik’s dark new fairy tale-inspired fantasy novel. In a small village near a darkly enchanted, dangerous Wood lives a girl named Angnieszka. I’ll definitely be adding it to my collection of fairytale romances. I am so glad I did This is a terrific story, masterfully told. Out of curiosity, I got Uprooted from the library.

I havent been as enamored by this type of tale since I was. When I saw Naomi Novik had a new fairytale style story out, I was intrigued. UPROOTED by Naomi Novik is part fantasy, part fairy story, and all parts wonder.

But it was written for adults, and there is violence and death and sex in the book. Naomi Novik, author of the New York Times best-selling and critically acclaimed Temeraire novels, introduces a bold new world rooted in folk stories and legends, as elemental as a Grimm fairy tale. (I do think in general books are safer than video in this way, because the reader has to continuously cooperate with the experience - if a reader hits something that disturbs them, they can skip ahead or quit reading.)Īnyway, I will go out on a limb and say, Uprooted is more appropriate for a ten year old than Clan of the Cave Bear. I was climbing on the piano when I was ten to sneak down my mom’s copy of Clan of the Cave Bear, but I was also the kind of reader who happily sailed right past anything that my brain wasn’t ready to process: I thought it was all about cool Stone Age survival skills and Ayla being the most awesome with her Cave Lion totem whoo! Naomi answers: I find it really hard to answer this question, because it depends entirely on the child in question.
